Overview

Consero is a luxury, award-winning property developer of exquisite, high price-point properties in the Home Counties.

Their craftsmanship and attention to detail positions them firmly in the top of their field, creating unrivalled, timeless homes in highly desirable locations.

With a mission to bring their offering to a wider, mid-level audience, Consero looked to shift their focus from individual prime properties to small and medium developments, whilst maintaining the same exceptional standards.

The problem & objective

Consero lacked the brand identity and online presence required to enter this new market.

Moving from multi-million pound homes towards small-medium developments of luxury homes and apartments, Consero needed an identity and website that communicated its high quality product and decades of experience.

One of the objectives was to assess the effectiveness of the current brand, whilst maintaining core elements of the logo and developing it where required. We needed to evolve the brand, ensuring the language and visual identity appealed to the new target audience and stood out from local competitors.

We also needed to design a completely new website to showcase new and upcoming developments, providing development and plot information, whilst making it easy for users to register their interest. This website would need to appeal to a wide range of users, from families to down-sizers, as each development was to have a slightly different target audience. It would also need to reflect and communicate Consero’s legacy, experience and proposition of ‘Experience is everything’.

Scope & constraints

This project was substantial, with multiple deliverables required at different points.

With this in mind, the entire brand project, which also included setting brand foundations, creating a brand video, brand guidelines and various collateral was worked on over the period of a few months.

In terms of the website, the time and budget was very tight, with the design stage being achieved in approximately 11 days.

The solution

Both the brand identity and website elevated Consero, resulting in great success upon launch with a significant increase in website visits and social media followers, along with recognition within both the property and design industries.

  • Over 16.7k website visitors across two medium sized developments.
  • Consero’s first development of over 50 apartments sold.
  • The website went on to be shortlisted for both The Drum Roses award and Property Marketing Awards for ‘Best Website’.

Process deep dive

The following sections outline the process that we went through to reach our solution.

Following an extensive brand workshop and language process with the wider team, during which the brand personality, story and tone of voice was established, I then began to work on the visual identity, in addition to a brand video and establishing brand guidelines.

The combination of the brand messaging and visual identity set the foundation for the website in terms of style, personality and tone of voice. Combining all of this with everything we knew about the target audience and Consero’s business goals, we were able to create a well-considered and beautiful solution that surpassed expectations.

Developing the visual identity

With the newly established brand messaging in place, I was able to begin developing the visual identity, ensuring it reflected the new tone of voice, personality and mission.

To build on Consero’s legacy, it was important that we maintained core elements within the logo and the black and gold colour palette. Alongside this, we also needed to ensure that the visual identity appealed to the new, wider audience.

Inspired by Consero’s mission to ‘immortalise the past and elevate the future’, two typefaces were selected, Baskerville to signify the past, and Proxima Nova to signify the future. Baskerville, with it’s elegant and classical letterforms made for the perfect heading font, whilst Proxima Nova provided a clean, modern and highly legible font for all body copy.

The colour palette was refined and expanded upon to provide supporting colours to the primary black and gold in the form of warm greys. These neutral colours amplified the feeling of luxury and elegance throughout the brand.

Following a successful presentation to the client, I created a comprehensive set of brand guidelines, documenting all of the various brand elements and collateral, which would set the tone for all of Consero’s visual design moving forwards.

Elevation through video

Beyond all printed and digital collateral, I developed a brand video to bring the brand to life and further communicate Consero’s philosophy.

This video went on to feature on the home page of the website, giving a brief introduction to Consero and their mission.

The logo itself was also brought to life, the animation communicating the idea of building and coming together in an elegant way. This animation inspired a series of graphical elements which also became part of the brand identity.

Establishing website requirements

Following the development of the brand and visual identity, we began the discovery stage for the website.

Before diving into any visual design, it was fundamental that we gained a better understanding of both the business and user needs and expectations.

Through working collaboratively with the client, as well as performing competitor analysis, we established key requirements and features, formulating a scope of work and basic site map.

Key findings from this discovery stage:

  • The target audience will be varied due to differing target audiences for each development. They will all however buy from Consero due to the brand and exceptional quality.
  • The development and plot pages are fundamental and must communicate all necessary information, whilst making it easy for users to register their interest.
  • Consero’s legacy, experience and craftsmanship is to be communicated and reflected throughout the site, ensuring that it is ‘design-led’ and in keeping with the newly developed brand language and visual identity.

Define & ideate

Utilising everything we had learnt so far, I began to work up low-mid fidelity wireframes, visually communicating all required content.

Through a number of iterations, we were able to explore many possible solutions relatively quickly, ensuring we would be able to make the most of the limited time for high fidelity design.

Prototyping

Now that we had established the key requirements and ideated on solutions, we were ready to begin the design phase.

I focused initially on the 4 key pages including the new homes page, development page, plot page and home page. Following approval, I worked through the remaining pages and responsive sizes.

  • Created key components and UI styles
  • Prototyped each page, including any interaction and animation
  • Created both desktop and mobile layouts

Key learnings & next steps

Some of the key learnings throughout the project were:

  • When time is tight, focus first on the absolute necessities in terms of pages and features.
  • When designing page modules and components, bear in mind they may not always be used as intended, so try to accommodate this where possible.
  • Involving the website developer as early as possible is fundamental to ensure all suggested design and functionality is doable within the time constraints.

If I was to continue working on this particular project, some next steps would be:

  • Begin to improve the site’s accessibility through revised button and link wording.
  • Explore the possibility of adding in search functionality to the home page header, a feature that many users may expect and be used to based on other property developer sites.
  • Explore the use of plot cards rather than an availability table, providing more imagery and information at a glance.
  • Consider removing the news section from the home page as it is not being updated regularly with new content.
